The Kentucky Division of Water is sponsoring a meeting March 7 in Frankfort to bring together representatives of the barge industry, natural resource organizations and environmental regulatory agencies to discuss ways to conduct river maintenance activities while protecting natural habitats. The meeting will take place at 300 Fair Oaks Lane in conference room D and is open to the public.
Session I, which will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m., will focus on the impact of Ohio River dredging activities on the habitat of mussels based on surveys conducted by officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Session 2, which will be held from 1 to 3 p.m., will focus on the issue of mussel habitat from the private industry perspective. Representatives of the barge industry will lead the discussion of operating practices, measures designed to minimize environmental impact and partnering opportunities for the future.
