FRANKFORT, Ky. (June 7, 2018) – The Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet is calling for nominations for its annual environmental awards to be presented during the 2018 Governor’s Conference on Energy and the Environment on Oct. 11-12 at the Lexington Convention Center.

Energy and Environment Cabinet Announces New Commissioner of the Department for Environmental Protection

FRANKFORT, Ky. (May 30, 2018) – Energy and Environment Cabinet Secretary Charles G. Snavely today announced the appointment of Tony Hatton as Commissioner of the Department for Environmental Protection (DEP). Hatton, who was named the DEP’s Deputy Commissioner in 2016, replaces former Commissioner Aaron Keatley, who recently accepted a job as Chief Deputy Director of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.

Hatton’s appointment takes effect June 1.

Energy and Environment Cabinet Celebrates Earth Day

Clear sunny skies created the perfect day for the Energy and Environment Cabinet’s 2018 Earth Day celebration on April 27, at the 300 Sower Building in Frankfort, Ky. More than half a dozen divisions representing both the Department for Environmental Protection and the Department for Natural Resources had exhibits that were open to both the public and employees.

Other exhibitors included The Raptor Rehabilitation of Kentucky, Woods and Waters Land Trust, Franklin County Solid Waste, Kentucky State University, the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, Glean KY, Life Adventure Center, KET and Together Frankfort.

Energy and Environment Cabinet Announces Winners of ‘Capture the Earth’ Photography and Video Contests

Middle and high school students take home gift certificates from Kentucky Department of Parks

FRANKFORT, Ky. (April 26, 2018) – Drakes Creek Middle School eighth-grader Julia Freeman is the winner of the eighth-annual “Capture the Earth” photography contest for middle school students, sponsored by the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet in celebration of Earth Day.

Keegan Hennessy, a 10th Grade student at Scott High School, won the “Capture the Earth” videography contest for high school students, for his video, “Re-cycle and Re-use, Stop Climate Change.” The video featured an effective use of images, video and music to send a strong message about climate change.

Coal Education Grant Applications Now Available

The Energy and Environment Cabinet is now accepting grant proposals for projects that provide public education on coal energy and coal related issues.

Applicants who are Kentucky non-profit organizations or public or private post-secondary educational institutions having qualifications and experience in successfully conducting such programs are eligible to apply.

Department for Environmental Protection Recognizes Employee Contributions to Environmental Protection

Each year the Department for Environmental Protection honors employees who have gone above and beyond their job titles and duties to protect the environment, educate the public and ensure Kentucky is using and preserving its natural resources in a responsible manner.

On Feb. 14,  Environmental Protection Commissioner Aaron Keatley, Dep. Commissioner Tony Hatton and Energy and Environment Cabinet Secretary Charles Snavely honored 19 individual employees and six teams with outstanding service to the environment.

Allen Luttrell Resigns as Commissioner of Kentucky Department for Natural Resources

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Jan. 4, 2018) – Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet Secretary

Charles Snavely today announced the resignation of Kentucky Department for Natural Resources Commissioner Allen Luttrell.

Luttrell, of Lawrenceburg, was appointed two years ago to the position by Governor Matt Bevin and provided strong leadership during his tenure that saw the department wage a highly successful campaign during the 2016 fall fire season, create development opportunities through the 2016 AML Pilot program, and significantly reduce reclamation liabilities in Kentucky’s coalfields. He resigned due to personal reasons.
