Reminder – Energy and Environment Cabinet Seeking Nominations for Awards

The Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet is calling for nominations for its annual environmental awards to be presented during the 2018 Governor’s Conference on Energy and the Environment on Oct. 11-12 at the Lexington Convention Center.

The awards will include the Secretary’s Award, the Kentucky Excellence in Energy Leadership Award, the Environmental Pacesetter Award, the Resource Caretaker Award, the Community Environmental Luminary Award, and the KY EXCEL Champion Award. Those selected to be honored will received their awards during the conference luncheon on Thursday, Oct. 12.

The deadline for all nominations is Aug. 1, 2018. The awards are as follows:

Kentucky Department for Environmental Protection Unveils Strategic Operational Plan for State Fiscal Year 2019

The Kentucky Department for Environmental Protection (KYDEP) is pleased to announce the completion of its 2019 strategic operational plan. Each year, the six agency divisions, the Division of Water, the Division of Waste Management, the Division of Air Quality, the Division of Enforcement, the Division of Compliance Assistance, and the Division of Environmental Program Support develop these plans to provide a transparent look into the agency’s activities and environmental priorities for the upcoming state fiscal year.

Kentucky’s Drinking Water Continues Excellence in Quality, Reliability, Annual Report Shows

Decrease in health-based violations result from technical assistance and cooperation

FRANKFORT, Ky. (June 26, 2018) – Data presented in Kentucky’s 2017 Annual Drinking Water Report  show that the state’s 435 public water systems reliably produced excellent quality water in 2017 with a marked decrease in violations. The report summarizes the compliance data for public water systems including health-based and administrative violations.

(June 21, 2018) – With summer upon us and July 4th quickly approaching, the Kentucky Division of Water (DOW) and the Kentucky Department for Public Health (DPH) offer these safety tips to help Kentuckians enjoy the many rivers, lakes and creeks in which we boat, fish, swim, canoe or otherwise enjoy our abundant water resources.

Despite many water quality improvements, there is the potential for human health risks in any body of water. By using common sense, your risks of experiencing water-derived health issues can be greatly decreased.

Dam Safety Day Reminds Us of Benefits, Responsibilities of Dam Ownership

Kentucky has an abundance of natural water resources that provide opportunities for residents from recreation to providing drinking water. You can’t drive far in the state without coming across one of Kentucky’s abundant natural water resources.

On top of  90,000 miles of rivers and streams here, there are more than 1,000 dams that serve many purposes for the citizens of the commonwealth of Kentucky.

The Kentucky Division of Water has the job of managing, protecting and upgrading the quality of the commonwealth’s water resources, and as part of that mission the Division of Water’s Dam Safety Program oversees more than 950 dams in the program.

Additional Date and Location Added for Kentucky Water Quality Standards Listening Sessions

In accordance with the Clean Water Act (CWA), Congress gave states the responsibility to establish objectives or goals for managing, maintaining, and enhancing water quality.

This responsibility is commonly referred to as state water quality standards (WQS). States are required to perform periodic reviews of state water quality standards, known as a Triennial Review, and hold a public hearing every three years pursuant to Section 303(c)(1) of the CWA.
