Program provides rubber mulch for playgrounds, tracks, athletic fields

The Energy and Environment Cabinet (EEC) today announced that $404,599 in grant funding has been awarded for one landscaping project and 39 playground projects.

Crumb rubber, made from recycled scrap tires, is used for mulch on playgrounds to enhance durability and safety; for fitness/walking tracks; for landscaping, and on athletic fields to reduce soil degradation and increase safety benefits. Kentucky Division of Waste Management Requests Applications for Crumb Rubber Grants

The Crumb Rubber grant program has been used to install rubberized gymnasium floors – this one is located at the Williamsburg Convention Center.

The Energy and Environment Cabinet is now accepting grant proposals for projects that promote the use of recycled waste tires. Kentucky schools, city and county governments, day care centers, public parks, state agencies or other entities interested in using crumb rubber as a top dressing on grass fields, as mulch in playground areas, or similar uses may apply for a grant.
