The Kentucky Division of Water is seeking public comment until May 18, 2015 on a draft report addressing water quality impairments related to pH and metals.  The report, Proposed Draft Total Maximum Daily Load for pH, Cadmium, Iron, Nickel and Zinc, 16 Pollutant-Waterbody Combinations on 6 Stream Segments, Hopkins County, Kentucky, has been prepared as required by the federal Clean Water Act.

Section 303(d) of the Clean Water Act requires each state to periodically identify specific waters where water quality problems exist.  The state is required to prioritize the list of impaired waters and calculate an allowable amount of pollutants for those waters known as a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL).  Continue reading “Public comment sought on draft report regarding water quality impairments related to pH and metals on six stream segments in Hopkins County”

Public Comment and Request Review Period on RCRA Hazardous Waste Storage Permit Renewal Application

The Blue Grass Army Depot (BGAD), located near Richmond, Ky., provides conventional ammunition services, chemical defense equipment management and manufacturing capabilities for the Department of Defense. The Blue Grass Chemical Activity (BGCA), a tenant of the 15,000-acre depot, is responsible for safekeeping the chemical weapons stockpile stored at the depot. BGAD and BGCA have submitted an application to the Kentucky Department for Environmental Protection, Division of Waste Management, for renewal of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) hazardous waste storage permit. The RCRA permit, set to expire in September 2014, covers both conventional munition operations waste storage in two munition bunkers (igloos) and chemical munitions waste stored in 47 igloos. Public comment period on report about Floyd’s Fork stream impairments extended to Aug. 29

The Kentucky Division of Water (DOW) has extended the public comment period from July 29 to Aug. 29 on a draft report addressing E. coli and fecal coliform impairments of 18 stream segments in the Floyds Fork watershed located in Bullitt, Henry, Jefferson, Oldham, Shelby and Spencer counties.

 The Clean Water Act requires each state to periodically identify specific waters where designated uses are not being met and water quality impairments exist. The state is also required to prioritize the list of impaired waters, calculate a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) of pollutants for those waters and devise plans to improve the water quality. Public Comment Period Extended on Report About North Elkhorn Stream Impairments

The Kentucky Division of Water (DOW) has extended the public comment period from July 22 to Aug. 22 on a draft report addressing bacteria impairments in three stream segments within the North Elkhorn Creek watershed.

The Clean Water Act requires each state to periodically identify specific waters where designated uses are not being met and water quality impairments exist. The state is also required to prioritize the list of impaired waters, calculate a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) of pollutants for those waters and devise plans to improve the water quality. EPA Extends Tier 3 Comment Period

Only two days after issuing the proposed Tier 3 rule, EPA last week announced it would extend the comment period for the rule.
